On June 30, 2026, the Japanese stock market exhibited extremely complex movements. Today’s market, coinciding with the semi-annual close, was not merely a continuation of a trend but rather an environment of intense “volatility” caused by multiple conflicting factors.
In this article, we organize the factors behind today’s price movements and discuss the structural changes suggested by the current market.1. The Intertwining Forces: Upward Drivers vs. Selling Pressure
Today, the Nikkei Stock Average initially saw a significant surge, inheriting the momentum of high-tech stocks in the US market shortly after trading began, temporarily exceeding 1,100 yen. However, it subsequently lost steam, resulting in unstable price movements. The primary factors that caused this volatility can be summarized into two points:
Benefit from U.S. High-Tech Stock Rally
The robust performance of the US high-tech stock market provided a boost to the Japanese market. Amid global capital inflow towards the technology sector, the Japanese market started its ascent by benefiting from this trend.Semi-Annual Close Rebalancing and Currency Concerns
On the other hand, today being the final day of the “semi-annual close” also created strong selling pressure. Selling related to “rebalancing,” where institutional investors adjust their portfolio ratios, was evident, counteracting much of the gains.Furthermore, concerns about potential “currency intervention” due to the weakening yen added weight to market sentiment. The movement in the foreign exchange market acted as a drag on stock prices.
2. The Emerging Trend: Divergence of Corporate Earnings
There is one other crucial theme that cannot be ignored when interpreting today’s market: **the selection based on corporate earnings**.In the financial results announcements for Fiscal Year 2026, which began in earnest in late April, an extremely clear contrast has emerged in the market.
- Strong Sectors/Companies: Companies with strong FY2026 performance and positive outlooks for FY2027 tend to maintain or push up their stock prices strongly.
- Stagnant Sectors/Companies: Companies with sluggish results and outlooks are losing market interest, leading to severe price formation.
This suggests not merely fluctuations due to the economic cycle, but a clear **structural polarization** where “winners” and “losers” are distinctly separated between sectors or individual companies.
3. Implications for the Future Market: A Shift from Indices to Fundamentals
Considering today’s volatility and the divergence in earnings, several important implications emerge for future investment strategies.Firstly, **it is dangerous to judge solely by index movements (averages)**. The overall index tends to fluctuate due to macroeconomic factors like rebalancing or currency shifts, making it difficult to gauge the market’s true strength from the rate of change alone.
Secondly, there is a **return focus on fundamentals**. Earnings forecasts for FY2027 are becoming the biggest driver supporting stock prices. Market attention is shifting toward higher-quality selection—not just asking “Are current earnings strong?” but rather, “Can they paint a story of growth for the next fiscal year?”
